This works for intermediate through advanced, depending on the content and the guidelines (and degree of support) provided to students. For a given theme, the students explore the theme and ultimately demonstrate their understanding of the theme by writing a children's book about the theme in the target language. Books are then sent to schools, children's waiting areas, etc., in regions that speak the target language. My students have done books to encourage healthy eating as part of our unit exploring nutrition and dietary guidelines and a book to help students prepare for their first plane or train trip for the unit in which they examined travel themes.
The degree to which this represents project-based learning as opposed to merely being a summative assessment also depends on how it is presented to the students and how the students' own exploration of related linguistic and cultural content contributes to their final product.
Sénégal Readers Project
Creating culturally authentic readers to help develop literacy skills for kids in Sénégal - all 8 elements present:
Significant content: language and culture - Students created stories for students in Sénégal. Their stories had to be culturally contextualized, relevant to the students lives, and included settings connected to the target culture.
21st Century skills - the 4 c's -critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration
Driving question: "How can we create literacy development storybooks for kids in Sénégal?"
Need to know - seems obvious, but there was a real-world need to know and the students were very motivated to make stories of significance for the kids in Sénégal
In-depth inquiry - research involved contacting a Peace Core worker in Sénégal about her literacy curriculum for content, language content, and cultural contexts for the stories to make sense there
Voice and Choice - My students created the books and their stories, as well as the illustrations.
Feedback and Revision - We did many different things: gallery walk of the story outlines, rough drafts, sought input from our Peace Core worker in Sénégal and our paired classes in Martinique and Marseille.
Public audience - the students in Sénégal received the books, and sent us messages about the stories.

Le café parisien
A WebQuest in French and English in which students design their own Parisian restaurant.
In this project (directions are presented in both English and French), students are provided a number of ressources to create a Café in Paris. How could this project idea be developped into a full-fledged PBLL-aligned project? What needs to be added to make it more consistent with the PBLL model espoused by Edutopia and BIE (and me, of course)?
